‘Stars Go Down Enthusiastically

Peter Northstars management were excited to hear that their petitions to have the team moved in a divisional realignment were granted.  The ‘Stars were off to a rough start in the Bower division with a 0-5-1 record. The realignment will see the ‘Stars returned to the Day division, where the ‘Stars were division champions, beginning next week.  Their first opponents will be the Thundercats, who are 5-2-0 in the Day so far.

Wolverines Claw Out Victory

In a close contest, the Wolverines (5-0-1) pulled past the Peter Northstars(0-5-1).
The game was a tight checking affair, but the Wolverines held a decided advantage throughout the first half of the game.  ‘Stars goaltender Craig Sills had to make stop after stop to keep the game scoreless after one period.  It looked like the game might remain scoreless in the second, but Wolverine forward Jeff Hayes slipped a puck past Sills with thirty-four seconds left in the second period to send the Wolverines into the third with a 1-0 lead.

The ‘Stars pressed hard during the third period in an attempt to draw even and had a golden opportunity to score when Wolverine Steve Smith was called for a slashing double-minor with 9:54 remaining in the game.  However, the ‘Stars couldn’t get their powerplay in gear and the penalty expired harmlessly.  With netminder Sills pulled for a sixth attacker in the final minute, the ‘Stars had one last chance to tie the game, but a point shot from ‘Stars defender David Roe was deflected out of play by a Wolverine defender and the ‘Stars lost the ensuing draw, leading to an empty net goal by Todd Oldham with 27 seconds left to play.  Oleh Hankivski of the Wolverines, apparently the only person still motivated to play with the game all but over, scored a meaningless goal on a breakaway with three seconds to play, making the final score 3-0.

‘Stars Lose Despite Massive Swartz

Mike Swartz made a triumphant season debut, but the Peter Northstars (0-4-1) were unable to overcome an early deficit and dropped a 6-3 decision to the Ice Cats(3-1-1).

Heading into the Tuesday night skirmish, the ‘Stars were buoyed by the return of forward Mike Swartz.  Swartz, who had trained for the upcoming season rock climbing, was raring to go, but so were the Ice Cats who came out of the gate flying.  Before PNS knew what hit them, the Cats were up 3-0 on goals by Cushing (:32), Chan(:41) and Evelyn (1:25).  Swartz answered back for the ‘Stars 14 seconds later to make the score 3-1 and the game looked to be a classic shootout.  The breakneck scoring pace slowed, but the Ice Cats were still able to extend their lead to three goals with a powerplay marker before the end of the first.  The teams traded goals in the second, with Northstar Tom Medcof banging home a shot from Jeff Morris, and Ice Cat Jamie Khan answering back.  Seb DeKloet made the score 5-3 early in the third, scoring his first goal of the season from Jeffrey and Swartz, but the ‘Stars were unable to close the gap any further and the Cats scored an insurance goal late in the third period.

Bandits Steal Win

The Peter Northstars (0-3-1) fell behind early and couldn’t recover in time against the Bandits (2-1-1).

The Bandits jumped out to a quick start, scoring a pair in the first two and a half minutes of the game.  They applied constant pressure on ‘Stars goaltender Nick Konkin who stepped in at the last minute for Sills.  The ‘Stars clawed their way back into the game after McKenzie intercepted a puck headed out of the Bandits zone and passed to the front of the net where both Morris and Klein stood uncovered.  Klein roofed a backhander over Bandit goaltender Horvath to cut their lead to one.  The two teams played a tight second period with neither one able to find the back of the net, largely due to the acrobatics of Konkin.  A comeback was not in the cards for the ‘Stars this night, as the Bandits finished the scoring early in the third when Groudins slipped a puck past Konkin for an unassisted goal.
